So I have started 2019 by chopping off three inches of hair,
not because I wanted a new hairstyle to see in the New Year, but due to the fact I have not been giving my kinky crown the attention it deserves. Since the summer I have been slacking with my hair care routine, I have become very lazy. Skipping deep treatments, neglecting to massage my edges and keeping my scalp moisturized. The end result was of course split ends! even my split ends had split ends. The only parts of my hair that seem to be flourishing were the nape and crown. The rest I could say was struggle city. So those ragged and frayed ends had to go. There is no coming back from split ends, no miracle product that would revive the dry and crispy strands.
So I did a self-cut to start afresh. I always find the best time for me to cut my hair is just before I am about to place them in braids because I do not notice the newly missing length, as my hair is protected and by the time I remove the protective style my hair has already started to grow back.
My hair goals over the next few months are to wear protective styles for length retention and to start gaining length again in time for the summer, when I like to let my fro be free. At the beginning of last year my hair became very thick and long so I am aiming to get it back to that state. The main way to reach my hair goal is to be consistent in my routine. Basically I need to get back to the early days of when I first turned natural and I maintained a strict hair care routine.
I will be wearing protective styles to keep my ends tucked away. My hair maintains length especially when it is in a cane row protective style so I will be incorporating more of this into my hairstyles. In-between protective styling I will make sure I always do a protein treatment using the Aphogee Keratin 2 minute reconstructor, this mini protein treatment helps to maintain strong and healthy strands. I apply it all over my hair for a few minutes after shampooing and it really does make a big difference. It is a non-drying formula and my hair is not hard after rinsing it off. In fact I am left with soft strands that are easy to detangle, ready for the conditioner.
In 2018 I became a bit too reliant on blow drying my hair and I feel this has added to the split ends occurring, so I will ease off using heat to stretch my hair when I am having break from protective styles. Another hair care step I started slacking on was the daily moisturising of my hair. As my hair is type 4C it can get really dry, especially in the winter and not moisturising it for even one day during the colder months can lead to breakage. I will be spritzing my hair with a leave-in conditioner twice a day to maintain the moisture balance. I am using the Palmer’s Natural Fusions Leave-In Conditioner with Mallow root. I will be reviewing this newly released product soon.
I am also trying to be more aware of my diet, by eating more fruits and vegetables. I have seen a big difference in my skin with a clearer complexion and hopefully in the coming months there will be an improvement in my hair too. For January I have cut out refined sugars and dairy. I am pretty good at drinking at least a litre of water daily, so the focus now will be more on the food I am consuming.
