We all remember those days in school when we use to carry around gel to make sure your edges were looking slick and that swirl was still stuck to your forehead at the end of the day. Years later edges are still a thing, it does not matter if they are slicked back, formed into waves, or hidden under a frontal of fake edges, the obsession for baby hair grooming continues. Manipulation of the edges can take its toll on our hairlines. Constant pulling and manipulation can lead to thin edges which can be very difficult to grow back.
Here are my top tips on growing and maintaining your edges.
1. I have been trying out natural home remedies to stimulate and maintain the thickness of my edges. Lately I have been trying out an Ayurvedic hair care treatment. This involves using ancient Indian natural remedies for hair growth in combination with maintaining a healthy mind and body. It sounds a bit kooky, but so far I have seen some good results.
The treatment uses two table spoons of warm extra virgin olive oil, two table spoons of honey and cinnamon powder. I then massage the mixture on my edges and place any desired deep treatment mask on the rest of my hair. I then use a steam cap for 30 minutes before washing out my hair. Immediately you will feel a stimulating sensation from the cinnamon. Cinnamon helps to stimulate blood flow needed for hair growth and it can reduce hair shedding.
With all natural remedies applied to the hair and scalp I recommend you perform a patch test to make sure you are not allergic to the formula. I have been using this treatment for several months and I have noticed an improved thickness in my hair line.
2. Maintaining a healthy diet is key for hair growth and maintenance. Especially increasing your intake of water will drastically improve the health of your hair, including your hairline. Also keeping a balance diet that contains protein, iron, and vitamin C. Omega-3 fatty acids are also vital and are found in food such as oily fish, walnuts and avocado. Healthy food can be boring, but sticking to a good nutritional diet will help with the growth of your hair line.
3. Black Jamaican Castor oil has done wonders for bringing my edges back to life in the past. I only noticed a difference when I used the oil twice a day and gently massaged it into my scalp. To see a difference you have to be consistent, it took several months of sticking to this routine before changes occurred.
4. The most obvious way to prevent hair loss at your edges is to avoid over manipulation of the hair line. I know it nice to have slayed edges, but you don’t have to gel them down every day, step away from the edge control and just wear your hair frizzy a few days a week. Excessive manipulation of the hairline that includes excessive brushing to slick your edges down, wearing tight hairstyles and constant protective styling without giving your hairline a break will start to thin your hairline over time.
