Caring for natural hair sometimes can be balancing act. A few weeks of not looking after your hair can leave your type 4 hair dry and crispy, even worst dreaded split ends can form. If you have not given your hair the tender loving care it deserves and you are going through a period of your kinks not behaving themselves. Below are some of the things you can do to revitalise your hair.
1. Are your strands splitting, thin, and dry. If yes then girl you need to switch up what you are doing and revitalise your kinks. A perfect remedy for this is a new haircut and shape; this can instantly transform a limp looking fro. Getting a hair cut from a professional stylist can improve the health of your hair and add volume making your hair appear so much thicker. Holding on to those thin ends just for the sake of having length is not a good idea. I was guilty of this in the past in my relaxed days, but now if my strands are lacking I am instantly reaching for the scissors. Health over length is the way to go.
2. You have been using the same natural products for years, but all of a sudden they have stopped working and your hair is just looking crazy. Your leave in conditioner might be leaving your hair dry or your styler no longer produces defined twists. Before you throw these products away or blame a change of formula you should clarify you hair to refresh your strands and remove weeks of product build up. Clarifying products or clarifying shampoos are stronger than your usual shampoo; they help to strip your hair meaning products will be able to work effectively on clean strands.
When I have clarified my hair it feels and looks so soft, it’s moisturised and the styling process is so much easier.
3. Sometimes your hair can be perfectly healthy, but you are just not feeling your kinks and coils like you use to. Try a new hairstyle to switch things up. It can be simple as a new braid style, adding colour or looking to YouTube or Instagram for inspiration. A new hairstyle makes you feel good from inside out, start feeling yourself and try something new to revive your hair.
4. A common problem with type 4 hair is dryness, due to the kinky pattern of the hair it is difficult for product to be distributed down the hair shaft making the strands prone to dryness. A hot oil treatment prior to shampooing can help to lock the moisture back into your hair leaving you with soft moisturised kinks. A simple mixture of olive and almond oil applied to the hair for fifteen minutes can help to restore the moisture.
