Recently I have noticed that my hair has become so much thicker and longer. Problem areas have started to grow, split ends have reduced and there is limited hair shedding. This is all due to me changing up my haircare routine over the last year and I have finally started to see great results. The main changes were I stopped manipulating my hair regularly and reduced the use of heat. I also consistently stuck to a simple routine to achieve hair growth. Here are my top tips on achieving hair growth for 4C hair and most importantly maintaining healthy hair. Protective Styling 4C hair is delicate and needs extra TLC, one way of doing this is by protecting your strands. Protective styling is not just for the winter month’s ladies. I have found that wearing protective styles all year round has really helped my hair to grow and maintain length. Achieving the right balance of protective styling and then having a break for a few weeks from protective styling has done wonders for my hair. At the moment I am obsessed with cane row/corn row hairstyles because they look fab, are quick to install and on the take down I am seeing results for increased growth with minimal hair loss. Low Manipulation styles Everyone loves a twist out but regular twisting and plaiting can cause breakage. When my hair is out of a protective style I wear my hair in styles that can last for days without re-styling such as a bun, flat twists, or mini twist. The less time my hands are in my hair the better, this has really helped me to maintain length. Moisturising
Regular moisturising on a daily basis is essential. 4C hair is prone to dryness and it needs to be moisturised regularly to maintain a healthy state. I am currently using Taliah Waajid Shea-Coco Condition as my spray leave in conditioner. This product keeps my hair moisturised for the entire day, it is not too heavy or greasy and does not have an over powering smell. It works well when my hair is braided and also on low manipulation styles. Water, Water, Water Yes you have heard this so many times before, but drinking plenty of water does actually work. One of my goals this year was to drink more water to help with my digestion, but it has also helped to grow my hair. I have seen better results compared to any hair growth vitamin or tonic I have taken in the past. Trimming I find that trimming my hair every season has improved the health of my hair. If I spot a few split ends in-between my trimming sessions I just cut them off. It is pointless clinging onto damaged unhealthy hair just to say you have length, eventually your hair will start to break and you will have to cut off a lot more hair. So keep up with regular trims if you want your hair to maintain length, appear thicker and it will be easier to manage. Minimise use of Heat I am not anti-blow drying or flat ironing but if you are using heat every wash day then it is just too much! Since I restricted my heat use to a minimum I am seeing results. When I do blow dry it is set on the lowest setting to protect my hair from heat damage. The process does take longer and my arms do ache afterwards, but I have not damaged my kinks. Try avoiding blowing drying your hair for six months to see the benefits. Treatments Deep treatments are a must for hair growth. Weekly steams and deep treatments of honey, olive oil and essential oils keep my hair soft and moisturised, which is ideal for hair growth.
