My current mantra for my natural hair is simplicity. Over the last few months I have been wearing box braids as a protective style. During the periods when I give my hair a rest from the braids the style of choice I am rocking is a goddess twist combined with a bun as a low maintenance style. Protective styling done correctly can help the hair to grow and retain length. The ends of the hair are tucked away to prevent breakage, resulting in healthier hair. Other benefits include low maintenance and being heat free. This style is quick and easy to achieve with only a few products which are reasonably priced. I complete the style on freshly washed hair and apply a small amount of Shea Moisture as my leave-in, I use The Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner on 4 sections of my hair. I then add coconut oil to each section to seal, as I am going to be refreshing my hair during the week I tend to start off with a lighter oil to prevent excessive product build up. I then part a medium size section at the front of my head for my goddess flat twist, during the wash process I am continually detangling my hair so parting and separating the hair is not difficult at this stage. Eco Styler Olive Oil gel is applied to the hairline and the front section is manipulated into a flat twist. The remaining hair is initially finger detangled and then sleeked back using a large tooth comb. More Eco Styler gel is applied to the remaining edges and the rest of the hair and finally I use a brush gently to place my hair into a bun. If you are looking for that extra slickness, you can tie a headscarf for 10 minutes to slay those edges. This style can be maintained for two to three days just using a spray leave-in conditioner to moisturise daily. I am currently using Jane Carter Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner. When my hair starts to feel dry I use the Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner, finger detangle, add a little more coconut oil, As I Am Double Butter Cream, Eco Styler gel and re-bun. I tend to keep the flat twist in for the whole week, until the next wash day. Remember guys this is protective styling, not neglected styling. There is still a level of maintenance required. Make sure you moisturise and do not keep the hairstyle for too long at the expense of neglecting your strands.
